About the Project.

Letterkenny 2040

Letterkenny 2040 is a process to realise a Regeneration Strategy for Letterkenny town centre, which builds on ambition and vision for the town to realise its full potential as a magnet that draws and keeps people here.

Momentum is building and the town has accomplished much, but there is an ambition to go further and deliver more. The Letterkenny 2040 Regeneration Strategy aims to guide development of the town centre, putting people at the very heart of regeneration and change. The Strategy is visionary, innovative and creative in the design of new ideas for the town centre, creating a place where everyone will find their perfect mix of familiarity and possibility.

Working in partnership with the wider community, Letterkenny 2040 is about designing the town centre as an attractive and thriving place, creating projects that can be further progressed toward funding opportunities when they arise.

Letterkenny 2040 Regeneration Strategy

This project has been commissioned by Donegal County Council, led by the Regeneration and Development Team and is funded by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), a flagship initiative of Project Ireland 2040. It forms part of a wider programme of regeneration initiatives that are also supported by URDF and are being progressed including design and development of walking and cycling infrastructure, strategic land acquisition for the purposes of regeneration, reuse of the former courthouse and the redevelopment of Market Square.

The Team

Coordinated by the Regeneration and Development Team, a multi-disciplinary team was appointed to help Donegal County Council bring forward this project. It was led by urban design and regeneration consultants The Paul Hogarth Company and also comprised Hall Black Douglas Architects, WS Atkins Transport Consultants, AV Browne and Queens University Belfast.

“The Letterkenny 2040 Regeneration Strategy contains lots of creative and exciting ideas to enhance Letterkenny town centre as an attractive and vibrant place, positioning us for future investment while responding to considerable challenges such as the climate crisis.”
